U.S. Secretary of Labor Chao Announces Second Grant Competition for the President’s Community-Based Job Training Grants

WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced the second competition for $125 million to be awarded through President Bush's Community-Based Job Training Grants.

"Community colleges are important partners in regional economic development," said Secretary Chao. "These $125 million in grants will build the capacity of community colleges to equip workers with the skills they need to succeed in the 21st century economy."

As with last year's competition, these Community-Based Job Training Grants will support workforce training for high growth industries through the nation's community and technical colleges. Their primary purpose is to build community colleges' capacity to equip workers with the skills required to succeed in local and regional economies.

In addition to awarding grants to individual community and technical colleges, this year's competition is expanded to include community college districts, state community college systems, One-Stop Career Centers and other entities in areas without access to community colleges.

A competitive Solicitation for Grant Applications (SGA) appears in today's edition of the Federal Register and can be accessed online through www.doleta.gov/sga/sga.cfm. The competition for grants will remain open through August 29, 2006, with awards to follow.
