U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Directs $1.6 Million Grant to Aid Flood Recovery in Massachusetts

WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a $1.6 million grant to assist in cleanup and recovery efforts in the wake of recent flooding in Massachusetts.

"The spring floods in Massachusetts displaced many residents from their homes and jobs," said Secretary Chao. "This $1.6 million grant will provide temporary jobs assisting in ongoing cleanup efforts and help workers rebuild their lives as well as their communities."

On June 12, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declared the counties of Essex and Middlesex eligible for FEMA's Public Assistance program. Within those jurisdictions, Merrimack Valley, Greater Lowell and North Shore cities and towns have been targeted for assistance.

The grant, awarded to the Massachusetts Department of Labor and Workforce Development, will provide temporary cleanup and recovery jobs to approximately 176 eligible dislocated workers. The project also will provide food, clothing, shelter, and other humanitarian assistance to individuals affected by mid-May's severe storms and floods.
