U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Announces $750,000 Grant to Aid Dislocated Workers in Rhode Island

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a National Emergency Grant of up to $750,000, with an initial release of $472,499, to assist approximately 180 Rhode Island workers affected by the closure of two HomeGoods Distribution Centers in Mansfield, Mass.

"These Rhode Island workers need access to services that will help them prepare for new careers in high growth industries," said Secretary Chao. "This grant will provide training, intensive reemployment services and job placement assistance to help these workers during this challenging time."

Residing in Rhode Island and commuting to work at the facilities in Mansfield, Massachusetts, these workers are benefiting from the cooperative efforts of both states. Massachusetts has carried out rapid response early intervention services while Rhode Island will provide core and intensive services as well as the training workers will need.

Workers impacted by these closures may face employment barriers because of limited proficiency in English and a lack of transferable skills. Peer counselors will be available through the grant to serve as translators and workers will receive supportive services as they prepare for new careers.

The grant will provide an array of core and intensive reemployment services ranging from orientation and skills training to job development and job placement activities. Services will include English-as-a-Second Language training to address the unique needs of these workers.

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
