News Release ETA News Release: [08/07/2006] U.S. Secretary of Labor Announces $2.4 Million Grant for Ohio WorkersFunds to Help Hannibal Ormet WorkersWASHINGTON The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $2,442,582 grant, with an initial release of $1,613,026, to assist approximately 106 workers dislocated from Ormet Primary Reduction and Ormet Rolling Mills in Hannibal, Ohio. The workers covered under this grant were certified for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), but did not qualify for a Trade Readjustment Allowance (TRA). "This grant will provide needed income support for Ohioans who need to invest time in skills training to prepare for new careers," said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. Workers from both Ormet facilities have been certified as eligible to apply for services through the TAA program. However, Ormet workers were involved in a labor dispute from September 2004 through December 2005, causing some of them to be ineligible for TRA. This grant, awarded to the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, will ensure those workers not eligible for TRA are able to access income support while enrolled in training. National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines.
