Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao Announces $3.6 Million in Aid for Dislocated New York Workers

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced $3.6 million in aid, including a National Emergency Grant of $1,615,750, to assist approximately 800 transitioning Carrier Corporation workers. The grant was awarded to the New York Department of Labor.

“This Administration is committed to helping workers who are transitioning as quickly as possible,” Chao said. “This $1.6 million grant will provide re-employment assistance services including assessment, counseling, pre-employment and vocational services, case management and follow up services.”

In addition to the National Emergency Grant announced today, the Department is also allocating $2 million in Fiscal Year 2004 Trade Adjustment Assistance training funds, for a total of $3.6 million, to address the employment-related needs of former Carrier workers.

Approximately 800 trade-certified former employees of the Carrier Corporation, a producer of air handling products in Syracuse, will benefit from the grant, of which $1 million will be awarded immediately.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary’s discretionary fund. A grant is awarded after a state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
