U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao Announces Additional $5 Million to Train Virginia Military Personnel for Jobs in High-Growth Industries

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced the final $5 million installment of a $20 million National Emergency Grant to provide assistance to spouses of military personnel assigned to the Hampton Roads area. The project will also assist spouses of military personnel, reservists and National Guardsman returning from overseas who did not have a job prior to placement.

“This additional $5 million in funding will help military personnel get the training they need to access good paying jobs as they separate from the military. This grant will also help military spouses get the training they need to find jobs as they relocate with their families,”said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

Awarded to the Southeastern Virginia Job Training Administration, the grant provides assistance to military personnel from Norfolk Naval Station, Oceana Naval Station, Little Creek Amphibious Base, Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis Army Installation.

Services provided through the grant include: assessment, counseling, job search assistance, job development, job placement, basic skills training, on the job training and other supportive services.

This $5 million in funding marks the last installment of a $20 million National Emergency Grant, awarded in 2001, to train military personnel for civilian careers in high-demand sectors facing skills shortages in the Hampton Roads and Norfolk area.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary’s discretionary fund. A grant is awarded after a state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
