U.S. Labor Secretary Announces Grant of More Than $1.1 Million for Dislocated Mississippi Workers

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a National Emergency Grant of $1,153,120 to aid approximately 320 displaced Mississippi workers. An initial amount of $566,560 will be awarded immediately.

“The Administration is providing this $1.1 million grant to help workers access training and transitional assistance so they can find new job opportunities,” said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

The grant, awarded to the Mississippi Development Authority, will provide classroom training, on-the-job training, adult education, skills upgrading, entrepreneurial training and apprenticeship opportunities. Other assistance will include relocation and out-of-area job search and supportive services, such as transportation, clothing and childcare.

The Southcentral Mississippi Works Local Workforce Investment Area will manage the project, which will focus on training for jobs in the healthcare, business, automotive, and retail and services industries.

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary’s discretionary fund. A grant is awarded after a state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
