Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao Announces $4.6 Million Grant to North Carolina to Continue Aid for Laid Off Burlington Workers

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao has announced a $4.6 million National Emergency Grant to continue trade-related assistance to approximately 2,021 workers dislocated from Burlington Industries.

“Our hearts go out to these workers and their families. This $4.67 million will provide immediate reemployment-related assistance to sustain these workers during this difficult transition. These funds will pay for retraining and supportive services such as needs-related payments, childcare and transportation,” said Chao. “We hope the fund will be distributed quickly so that these workers will know that they are not alone—we are committed to helping them get the assistance they need to rebuild their working lives.”

The grant will be used to continue providing re-employment transition services for workers certified for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). Services provided will include job search and placement assistance, job search workshops, retraining, and supportive system such as transportation, childcare, and needs-related payments.

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary’s discretionary funds. A grant is awarded after a state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met. This grant was awarded to the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Division of Employment and Training, which will also operate the project.
