Supreme Court Bar Admissions

1868-1950

The following index was compiled from the official records of the Colorado Supreme Court.  The record is the request by an attorney to the Supreme Court to be approved to practice law within the state.  The information contained in the record varies from person to person, but usually shows the name of the person requesting the approval, the county where they live, the date of the application and the date they were granted a license in Colorado to practice law.

Application for admission to the bar. Dated June 16, 1904

Additionally, many of the bar admission files have letters of recommendations from other attorneys, judges or law schools.  You may also find references to where the person practiced law before coming to Colorado, a letter of approval and acceptance from the Supreme Court and in a few instances an original copy of their law school diploma and/or license from a previous state.  For the genealogist, this is one of those secondary sources that could have some valuable information contained within it.

An earnest effort was made to transcribe each name correctly.  However, some of the handwritten entries were hard to read, making it difficult to ensure the spelling of the name is correct.  Please check similar or closely spelled names as this may help you in your search.

If you find a name on this list and would like a copy of that person's record, please contact us.  We do respond to regular mail, phone requests and e-mail requests (please include your postal address in the e-mail).

We do have search, handling and copy fees.  Please contact us in order to determine the charges for your request.
