Sector Long Island Sound - Fishing Vessel Safety

In 1988, Congress passed the Commercial Fishing Industry Vessel Safety Act (CFIVSA). This act required the Coast Guard to issue new regulations for safety equipment and operating procedures for fishing, fish tender, and fish processing vessels. It also required the Coast Guard to tighten casualty reporting requirements.

Congress passed this act because the fishing industry proves every year that it is one of the most dangerous occupations in this country.

These regulations apply to all commercial fishing vessels, whether they are documented (greater than 5 net tons) or state registered, although requirements vary in scope depending on the area of operation, size of vessel, and manning.

We have provided a copy of the regulations for you online so that you may get an idea of the requirements that may apply to you. However, the best way to ensure that you have complied with thses regulations prior to leaving the dock, is to get a FREE, voluntary dockside examination.
