Dimond “O”
Campground Chosen for Best Fishing
Sonora, CA (August 12, 2008) ... The Forest Service today
announced that the Stanislaus National Forest (NF) Diamond “O” campground on the
Groveland Ranger District has recently been chosen by Reserve America as one of
America’s Top 50 Campground for Fishing for 2008. The award has been announced
on the Reserve America campground reservation website. Located off Evergreen
Road and set in a beautiful mountain landscape, the campground offers easy
access to popular fishing spots along the Middle Fork Tuolumne River.
Diamond “O” Campground is operated under a concessionaire permit by American
Land and Leisure, and this award could not be possible without their devoted
staff of Campground Managers and also the Area Managers. Originally a Boy Scout
Camp established in the 1930’s, the recently rebuilt campground features paved
interior roads, paved parking pads for recreation vehicle campers, and level
tent pads for tent campers. Restroom facilities are handicap accessible, as are
many of the 38 campsites.
Dimond “O” campground is hidden away in the rugged splendor of the high
Sierra back country, is a perfect getaway destination for a family vacation or a
weekend escape. The Middle Fork of the Tuolumne River gently bends around Dimond
“O”, beckoning anglers to test their skills for the abundant stock of rainbow
trout and the elusive native German brown trout.
The Middle Fork is stocked regularly and fishermen are almost always assured
of catching their limit. Dimond “O” is just minutes away from Yosemite National
Park and Hetch-Hetchy Reservoir Recreation Area and serves as an excellent base
camp for those two locations as well.
The Stanislaus National Forest is home to a multitude of lakes and
reservoirs, as well as 811 miles of rivers and streams and a variety of fish
species. Common species include rainbow, Eastern brook and German brown trout.
The fishing areas are in a variety of terrain; some easy, some difficult. Most
Forest campgrounds are operated on a first-come, first-served basis; however,
nine of the Forest’s 55 developed campgrounds are available by reservation.
Reserve America is a campground reservation service participating in the
National Recreation Reservation Service
(NRRS). The NRRS is a one-stop reservation service for the USDA Forest Service,
Army Corps of Engineers, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management,
Bureau of Reclamation and Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. With over
45,000 reservable facilities at over 1,700 locations, the NRRS is the largest
outdoor recreation reservation service in the country.
