Lumsden Road to Close for Repair and Maintenance

Sonora, CA (October 23, 2007) ... The Forest Service today announced that the Stanislaus National Forest (NF) Groveland Ranger District’s Lumsden Road, also known as Forest Road 1N10, will be closed for the season beginning October 26, 2007 to provide for public safety during road repair and maintenance operations. The road is expected to remain closed for the upcoming winter season, and reopen for public travel this coming spring.

Lumsden Road will be closed on the south end at its gated intersection with Ferretti Road, and on the north end, at a point approximately 3 miles above the Lumsden Bridge. The repair and maintenance project is designed to restore currently inaccessible sections of the road and improve travel conditions for Forest visitors.

Specifically, the Lumsden Road project will increase driver visibility on narrow curves, surface several steep and rocky sections, improve water drainage, expand Tuolumne River trailhead parking, and improve parking at the Lumsden boat launch. Additionally, the repair work will include installation of a wire wall designed to repair a damaged section of the road and restore access to Lumsden Bridge.

The project is the result of a combined partnership effort on the part of the Forest Service, City and County of San Francisco Hetch-Hetchy Project, Tuolumne County Resource Advisory Committee, and the Tuolumne River Outfitter and Guide Association.
