Niagara Creek
Fire
Sonora, CA (August 10, 2007) ... The Forest Service today announced
that the structure fire near the Niagara Creek Campground that spread into the
Stanislaus National Forest is 100% contained. Some containment lines around the
100 acre wildland fire are indirect, meaning that the fire has not yet reached
the containment lines. Smoke will continue to be visible throughout the day
while the fire continues to burn towards the lines. Fire hose has been laid out
extending to about 70% of the containment line.
Fire fighting resources will be reduced today. Tuolumne County fire engines
have been released and only one airtanker is on standby awaiting orders. A crew
change out will commence at 9:00 this morning. Two helicopters will continue to
drop water on the fire throughout the day.
The origin of the fire has been established to be an unoccupied recreation
residence cabin on National Forest land. The cause of the fire is under
investigation. Two other cabins in the vicinity and the Niagara Creek Campground
were not burned.
Niagara Creek Campground is off of Highway 108 on Forest Road 6N24, at about
6500 feet elevation two miles Southeast of Donnell Lake on the Summit Ranger
District. The campground remains open for weekend recreation, but campers may
experience more noise that usual as fire crews continued to transit.
