Structure Fire
at Niagara Creek
Sonora, CA (August 9, 2007) ... The Forest Service today announced
that a structure fire near the Niagara Creek Campground has spread into the
Stanislaus National Forest. The structure, determined to be a total loss, is
believed to be a privately owned cabin under permit to occupy National Forest
Land. The fire was reported about 1:30 p.m. today and is about four acres in
size.
Two Forest Service engines and a water tender were immediately dispatched to
work on the spread of the wildland fire along with three CAL Fire engines to
battle the structure fire. Drops by two helicopters with water buckets and three
airtankers are being directed by an air attack aircraft. Four additional
engines, two hand crews, two dozers and additional air tankers have been
requested.
Niagara Creek Campground is off of Highway 108 on Forest Road 6N24, at about
6500 feet elevation two miles Southeast of Donnell Lake on the Summit Ranger
District.
No cause for the fire has yet been determined.
