Stanislaus National Forest Seeking Volunteers for Forest Interpretive Program

Sonora, CA (February 13, 2007) ...Do you enjoy the out-of-doors, wish to learn and share your knowledge about nature or history of our area? Do you like working with friendly people and making a difference in our community? If so, you may wish to be part of a growing cadre of dedicated people who volunteer for the Stanislaus National Forest Interpretive program. The Stanislaus National Forest Interpretive Team will hold an introductory session for those wishing to learn more about interpretive volunteer opportunities on Saturday, March 10 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Tuolumne Room at the Supervisor’s Office on Greenly Road in Sonora, California.

“Volunteers are the heartbeat of the Forest Service and we are pleased to offer this training opportunity to help people get involved in the many programs we offer connecting people to their public lands”, stated Stanislaus National Forest Public Affairs Officer Jerry Snyder. Opportunities abound for volunteers. From assisting with school and summer programs to developing informational flyers and artwork or kiosk maintenance, to assisting with the many special events, there are jobs for every level of expertise. Some people may wish to be behind the scenes helping with day to day tasks, while others desire to learn and share a new skill. Whatever your aspirations are, volunteering can be a rewarding and fun experience.

The class will be a lively hands-on workshop and provide an overview of the Stanislaus National Forest Interpretive program. Opportunities for volunteering will be available at the Calaveras, Groveland, Mi-Wok and Summit Ranger Districts. A commitment of 8 hours will be requested in exchange for the training. Participants 14 to 17 years of age are eligible to volunteer with parental consent. Registration for all participants is required and can be made by contacting Phyllis Ashmead at (209) 586-3234 ext 614.

For further information or questions please contact Phyllis Ashmead at (209) 586-3234 ext 614 or Barbara Balen at (209) 795-1381 ext 337.
