Health Promotion

Health Promotion Smoke Alarm NHANES Van Tune In Plant Protective Gear Fruit Trash Can Here is a home scene with a man on his exercise bike. CDC promotes healthy behaviors and safe environments. CDC experts provide information to people about reducing risks to health, such as tobacco use, poor diet, and lack of physical activity. (Be sure to look in the trash can.) CDC also prevents injuries and disabilities by promoting the use of smoke detectors, bicycle helmets, and seat belts, for example. In the parking lot across the street, CDCs National Health and Nutrition Examination van is collecting health information from volunteers to help us understand more about the health status of the American people.

Smoke Alarm

No SmokingLook at the smoke alarm and "No Smoking" sign. I guess Joe thinks that he's going to exercise so fast and hard he'll stir up smoke. Even though Joe does "heat things up," we know the real reason for the smoke alarm. If a fire does start, Joe wants to have time to save himself and of course, save his exercise equipment. To learn more about fire safety for your home, click here.

But the chances of a fire starting are slim, like Joe. Why? Well, Joe doesn't smoke and guess what? Neither should you. Click here to see "The Surgeon General's Report for Kids about Smoking"

NHANES Van

NHANES VanNo, Joe's not moving. That's CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination van parked outside his window. It's there to collect health and nutritional information from volunteers, like Joe, so doctors can learn how to keep America a happy AND healthy place to live. Click here to learn more about what that van is up to.

Tune In

HeadsetClassical, hip hop, jazz or rock? It doesn't matter because whatever the beat, a little music goes a long way to help you "strike the right chord" to make exercising more fun. Or maybe Joe is tuned in to a local radio station where he hears a public service announcement from the CDC. Click here to hear and see young adults speaking candidly about protecting themselves from HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Plant

PlantAh, fresh air. Well sort of. This plant is giving Joe oxygen in exchange for the carbon dioxide he's giving it. Sounds like a fair deal/exchange to me. And speaking of sounds, be sure to click on Joe's headset.

Protective Gear

Helmet
Skates

Let's see, there's a helmet plus arm and knee pads. Now I'm pretty sure Joe doesn't need them when he's inside on his exercise bike... at least I hope not. But when he's outside rollerblading or bicycling, it's a different story. Why? Well you'll find out why rocks and rolling DON'T always go together if you click here. Then click here to go to the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center

Fruit

FruitYum! Delicious, nutritious and healthy too. You'll never be in a jam, if you have fruit as part of your daily diet. In fact, you should eat 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day. To see for yourself how fruit and other food groups are important to help you get...and then stay, in shape, click here to visit the interactive Food Guide Pyramid.
Bon appetite.

Trash Can

Trash CanThese donuts, potato chips and cigarettes are right where they belong... in the trash can and not in your body. Look around Joe's room and see if you can locate something to eat that's good for you. Hint: it's in a bowl. And if you want to find out why smoking is so gross and unhealthy, just click here.
