Calaveras Ranger District

Day Use Sites

Campfire permits are not required within developed day use sites; however, campfires are limited to the grills provided. Campfire permits are required if you plan to build a fire or use a stove outside a recreational vehicle away from a developed site. Permits are free and may be obtained at the Calaveras Ranger District.

  • Crescent Cove Picnic Ground: One mile west of Hathaway Pines on Highway 4. Five tables, 4 vault toilets. No water. Elevation 3300 feet. Picnicking only. No Fee.
  • Cottage Springs Picnic Ground: Four miles east of Camp Connell on Highway 4. Tables and barbecue grates, vault toilet. Elevation 5500 feet. Picnicking only. No Fee.
  • Spicer Reservoir Boat Launch: Eight miles southwest of Highway 4 on Spicer Reservoir Road. Boat ramp with turnaround area and movable dock. No boat mooring available. Parking for 25 vehicles with trailers and 20 cars. Vault toilets (accessible for persons with disability). Elevation 6300 feet. Open June to October. Daily fee not yet established.
  • Marmot Picnic Ground: At the west end of Lake Alpine, next to Lake Alpine Campground. Twenty-one tables, 19 campfire grills, flush toilets and piped water. Suitable for persons with disability. Picnicking only. No Fee.
  • Lake Alpine Boat Launch and Picnic Ground: Ten tables, 7 barbecue grates, 4 flush toilets and piped drinking water. Parking for 60 cars and trailers. Speed limit on lake is 10 mph. No motorized boats on lake at night. Large boats not recommended. Elevation 7400 feet. Open mid-June to October.
  • Chickaree Picnic Ground: At east shore of Lake Alpine. Tables and fireplaces, flush toilets and piped water. Elevation 7400 feet. Open mid-June to October. Picnicking only. No Fee.
  • Sourgrass Day Use Area: Located outside Dorrington on North Fork Stanislaus River at Sourgrass/Board's Crossing Road, across river from Wa Ka Luu Hep Yoo (Wild River) Campground. 10 picnic tables, 10 BBQ stoves, toilets, drinking water. Day use parking for approximately 15 cars in addition to picnic area. Fishing and hiking. No fee.
