UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

In the week ending July 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 346,000, a decrease of 58,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 404,000. The 4-week moving average was 380,500, a decrease of 10,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 390,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week ending June 28, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 28 was 3,202,000, an increase of 91,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,111,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,126,000, an increase of 16,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,109,500.  

The fiscal year-to-date average for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment for all programs is 2.926 million.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 398,432 in the week ending July 5, an increase of 30,009 from the previous week. There were 417,554 initial claims in the comparable week in 2007.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending June 28, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,856,382, an increase of 781 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,303,357.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending June 21.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,415 in the week ending June 28, an increase of 38 from the prior week. There were 1,601 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 82 from the preceding week.

There were 11,699 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 21, an increase of 478 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 19,204, a decrease of 555 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 21 were in Puerto Rico (4.7 percent), Pennsylvania (3.2), Oregon (3.1), Alaska (3.0), California (2.9), Michigan (2.9), Rhode Island (2.9), Nevada (2.8), New Jersey (2.8), and Arkansas (2.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 28 were in Kentucky (+4,192), Massachusetts (+3,467), Indiana (+3,313), Michigan (+3,260), and New York (+2,894), while the largest decreases were in Pennsylvania (-2,510), Iowa (-2,130), Wisconsin (-2,129), Georgia (-1,882), and Maryland (-1,520).
