Commanding Officer of CGC BEAR
Commander Helen K. Toves
Commander Helen Toves received her commission in 1990 when she graduated from the U. S. Coast Guard Academy with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture. Her first assignment was as a student engineer onboard the 378 foot High Endurance Cutter MELLON (WHEC 717), homeported in Seattle, Washington.
Commander Toves’ other afloat assignments include tours as Engineer Officer onboard the Cutter RUSH (WHEC 723) homeported in Honolulu, Hawaii and most recently as Executive Officer onboard the 270 foot Medium Endurance Cutter NORTHLAND (WMEC 904), homeported in Portsmouth, Virginia. Assignments ashore include tours as a Port Engineer at Naval Engineering Support Unit Honolulu; type support manager at Maintenance and Logistics Command Pacific (vr) in Alameda, California; and as a member of the Deepwater Replacement Project at the Engineering Logistics Center in Baltimore, Maryland. She was recently the Logistics Department Head at Sector Miami. CDR Toves holds a Masters of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
Commander Toves’ awards include one Meritorious Service Medal, three Coast Guard Commendation medals, and two Coast Guard Letters of Commendation.
Commander Toves assumed command of CGC Bear on 23 May 2008.
