GOV. RITTER CONGRATULATES WORLD YOUTH CHECKERS CHAMPION COLTON CARDIE OF ARVADA
Gov. Bill Ritter today congratulated 10-year-old Colton Cardie of Arvada as the reigning World Youth Checkers Champion, presenting Colton with the Governor's Award of Excellence medallion and a State of Colorado lapel pin.
Gov. Ritter, who also played a friendly game of checkers with Colton today (Colton won in 12 minutes), commended the youngster for becoming both the national champion and world champion during competitions in Las Vegas last summer.
On hand at today's event were several of Colton's relatives, including his parents, 8-year-old younger brother, Conrad, who placed second at the national competition last year, and his grandfather, John Cardie, who taught both boys how to play checkers.
Gov. Ritter asked Colton to proudly wear the Colorado lapel pin at future tournaments so all in attendance will know that he represents the great State of Colorado.
