Partnering to Fight HIV/AIDS
The CDC Global AIDS Program (GAP) Guyana office was launched in September 2002.
Since then, CDC has been supporting the Guyana Ministry of Health by focusing
its efforts on preventing transmission of HIV/AIDS, treatment and care of those
who are already infected with HIV, and increasing laboratory capacity and
building infrastructure. Before CDC's involvement, Guyana had limited capacity
to conduct HIV surveillance, diagnose HIV infection, monitor patients on
antiretroviral therapy (ART), and diagnose opportunistic and sexually
transmitted infections. Today the national algorithm for HIV rapid testing and
the national availability of CD4 testing for disease monitoring are models for
best practice in resource-constrained environments.
In 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the President's Emergency Plan
for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Guyana was designated a focus country of the
initiative and CDC GAP Guyana became a part of this unified US Government effort
to turn the tide against the epidemic.
