D-Train FAQ

CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) has created the DASH Training Network, or “D-Train,” a national cadre of master trainers to provide workshops on how to use DASH school health tools. These workshops are designed to help those who work in and with schools improve school health policies, programs, and curricula.

Workshops are currently available on two DASH tools: the School Health Index: A Self-Assessment and Planning Guide (SHI) and the Physical Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (PECAT). The SHI is a self-assessment and planning guide that enables schools to identify the strengths and weaknesses of their school health promotion policies and programs and to develop an action plan for improving student health. The PECAT is a tool for analyzing written physical education curricula to determine how closely they align with national standards for high-quality physical education.

Free Workshops

Now scheduling free workshops for 2008

Workshops are currently available on the SHI and the PECAT. For a limited number of sites, CDC will pay for all of the expenses associated with the trainer (e.g., travel expenses, lodging, per diem, honorarium); the site will need to cover any costs associated with a facility, materials, and refreshments. Access to the CDC-supported workshops is first come, first serve. You are encouraged to schedule your workshop soon. Note the following eligibility criteria for free workshops:

  • The majority of SHI workshops in 2008 will be hosted by a regional organization or a state agency, unless special approval is granted.
  • PECAT workshops in 2008 may be hosted by regional organizations, state agencies, or local agencies.
  • At this time, free SHI and PECAT workshops will NOT be offered to individual schools.
  • Workshops should be a minimum of 4 hours in length to ensure in-depth training. SHI workshops may be up to 8 hours in length, and PECAT workshops can be up to two days in length, depending on the needs and level of readiness of the participants.
  • Most workshops will be held as part of a state professional development meeting or in conjunction with a state or regional conference.

Additional Workshops

Although the total number of free workshops (i.e., paid for by the CDC) for 2008 is very limited, additional workshops may be available if another agency has funds to support a trainer’s travel and honorarium. Please submit a Workshop Request Form, and the CDC will connect you to a master trainer based on availability.
