of Standards and Technology The Commerce Departments National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will host a one-day conference, Continuity of Operations: Planning and Response in Todays Environment, covering the latest developments in contingency planning for crises that affect critical computer systems. Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, will deliver the keynote address at 8:45 a.m. Other speakers will include contingency planning experts from a variety of companies and computer security specialists from NISTs Information Technology Laboratory. Key areas such as electrical power distribution, emergency services, transportation and electronic commerce depend heavily on computer systems. The conference will focus on current thinking both within the federal government and the private sectoron how to keep information technology operations for these critical infrastructures up and running during times of crisis. Additionally at the April 5 conference, NIST plans to release an economic report showing how the use of role-based access control (RBAC) technology for controling access to computer networks has resulted in benefits of about $292 million. Reporters will receive a copy of the report in their press packets.
