This true-color Terra MODIS image from June 12, 2003, features Alaska´s Umnak and Unalaska islands. They are part of the Aleutian Islands, which are a submerged continuation of the Aleutian Range in southern Alaska. Both Umnak (left) and Unalaska (right) islands still have snow covering their almost-treeless surfaces. Most of these islands are part of the Aleutian National Wildlife Reserve and are home to a number of indigenous Aleut populations. Snow covers the circular Okmok volcano crater in the center of the northern half of Umnak Island.
