Mount Oyama, a volcano on the Japanese island of Miyakejima, has been erupting sporadically since June of 2000. On February 22, 2001, the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) captured a plume of ash rising into the air and drifting toward the Japanese mainland. Tokyo bay is located to the north of the erupting volcano.
