Career

Greg Seamon has been involved in prescribed fire and wildfire for the past 28 years, working primarily in the Southeast. Greg was a founding member of the North Florida Prescribed Fire Council, serving as a steering committee person and was Chair in 1993. He was responsible for organizing the first three Prescribed Fire Media Academies in north Florida. In 2005 he received the North Florida Prescribed Fire Council Chairman’s Award for his work with the council promoting prescribed fire. He serves as an instructor for a number of federal and state fire courses including fire behavior and operations classes.

Greg worked the past 3 years as the Senior Restoration Ecologist for WilsonMiller, Inc. Prior to joining WilsonMiller, he worked 15 years as The Nature Conservancy’s Northwest Florida Director of Science and Conservation Resources. He also worked for The Nature Conservancy in New York and the National Audubon Society in south Florida. He pioneered research and application of sandhill community restoration in the Florida panhandle, partnering with state and federal agencies to expand restoration opportunities of this important natural community. Greg currently serves on the board of the Southeast Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration. He served as the Chapter’s President in 1999-2000.

2008, responsible for fire training opportunities associated with the PFTC, including the 21-day sessions and NWCG courses. 2004-2008, responsible for a number of mitigation and unique planning projects in Florida, focusing on restoration of natural communities, listed species surveys, land cover mapping, and resumption of natural processes in maintaining those sites. 1989-2004, responsible for land management of all Conservancy lands in the Florida panhandle, including sandhill community restoration, prescribed fire, and research and monitoring, in addition to working with private partners and public agencies on appropriate land management for biodiversity. 1987-1989, Land Steward for the Conservancy’s Lower Hudson Chapter, NY, managing 25 preserves in a five county area. 1980-1987, Warden/Biologist at National Audubon Society’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, FL, responsible for management and maintenance on 11,000-acre preserve including hydrologic and faunal monitoring, environmental education, prescribed burning, and exotic plant species control.
