Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge
Hatchie NWR includes 11,556 acres along the Scenic Hatchie River and is located about four miles south of Brownsville, Tennessee. The refuge was established in 1964, primarily to provide habitat (food, water and shelter) for migrating and wintering waterfowl


Getting There . . .
Hatchie NWR office is located at Oneal Lake on Hwy 76 immediately south of I-40's Exit 52. From Memphis, TN take I-40 east about one hour to Exit 52. Exit left or north onto Hwy 76, than go 1.5 miles to the Refuge Office on the right. From Nashville, TN take I-40 west to Exit 56. Exit left or south onto Hwy 76, go 3 miles to the Refuge Office on the left.

Wildlife and Habitat
When the first settlers arrived in Mississippi River Delta, over 25 million acres of swamp forest habitat, dominated by water-tolerant oaks, stretched before them.

Over 200 species of birds, 50 species of mammals and an amazing assortment of reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates can be found in the varied habitats of Hatchie NWR.

Managment Activities

The primary practice at Hatchie Refuge is the manipulation of water in the 400 acres of wetland impoundments. Forest management practices are planned to increase the percentage of red oaks in the bottomland forest, provide mature trees for certain species and provide young trees for certain species requiring that type of habitat.
