Percy Zahl

Percy Zahl is an Associate Scientist in the Proximal Probe Microscopy facility of the Center for Functional Nanomaterials at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Born in Germany, he studied Physics at the Institut für Festkörperphysik (solid state physics, surface science), Universität Hannover, Germany and received his Diplom in Physics in November 1996, continuing his work at the same Institution as an Ph.D he received his Dr. rer. Nat. degree (Ph.D.) in December 2000. From 2001 – 2003 he worked as a Postdoc at Deptartement of Physics, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, USA. From 2003 – 2005 he was a Postdoc at Science & Technology, Zurich Research Laboratory, IBM Zurich, Switzerland.

Percy holds a patent "Defining a pattern on a substrate - US Patent 7315367. (Filed at IBM Zurich)"

His major research interests are in surfaces science and nanostructures, especially catalysis, (opto-) electronics and hydrogen storage using Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) and related techniques as spectroscopic imaging as he major tools. He currently develops and designs an In-situ Nanopatterning system “2nd generation Nanostencil project�.
SPM related instrument development, including hard- and software design for system control and large scale multidimensional data analysis is one of his tasks to support the SPM community at CFN and word wide. He also is the Design & Project leader of GXSM, an open source SPM (and more) software with hardware and DSP based data acquisitions and instrument control. (http://gxsm.sourceforge.net)
