Born in Germany, he studied Physics at the Institut für Festkörperphysik (solid state physics, surface science), Universität Hannover, Germany and received his Diplom in Physics in November 1996, continuing his work at the same Institution as an Ph.D he received his Dr. rer. Nat. degree (Ph.D.) in December 2000. From 2001 – 2003 he worked as a Postdoc at Deptartement of Physics, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, USA. From 2003 – 2005 he was a Postdoc at Science & Technology, Zurich Research Laboratory, IBM Zurich, Switzerland.
