Theory & Computation

Altaf Karim is a research associate in Theory & Computation Group in the Center for Functional Nanomaterials at Brookhaven National Laboratory. A native of Pakistan, he holds a M.Phil (Quaid-i-Azam University) and a PhD (Kansas State University) in physics. He has the honor of working as a visiting researcher in Nobel Laureate Dr. Gerhard Ertl’s group at Fritz-Haber Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in Berlin. He has also worked in the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Delaware, as a post doctoral fellow. His graduate research was focused on multiscale modeling of materials to study the atomistic mechanisms of diffusion and growth of nano structures on metal surfaces. At BNL, he has been developing and implementing a modeling framework (density functional theory based kinetic Monte Carlo) to investigate the underlying catalytic mechanism in reversible hydrogen storage. His current research interests also fall in the area of understanding the catalytic processes on nano structures and surfaces for alternative fuel (hydrogen) production.
