William Sherman

Soft/Bio Materials

William Sherman is in the Biological and Soft Nanomaterials Theme at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN). A native of New York City, he did his undergraduate studies at Brown University, his PhD in Physics at the University of Pennsylvania, and post-doctoral studies in the Department of Chemistry at New York University. His background is in structural nucleic-acid nanotechnology: assembling complex structures and mechanical devices with nanometer-scale features using nucleic acids - mostly DNA – as the sole construction material, and Watson/Crick base-pairing as the sole assembly mechanism. Sherman’s current research focuses on building novel DNA nanostructures, and using these structures to organize and manipulate guest particles with interesting optical, electrical, or catalytic properties. Sherman provides support for CFN users, both as an expert in the architecture of complex nucleic acid nanostructures, and by constructing nano-scale scaffolds and templates to direct the assembly and movement of non-nucleic acid materials.
