Fire Crews Contain Spitz Fire on Kaibab National Forest

WILLIAMS, Ariz. — Fire crews responded to a new fire on the Kaibab National Forest west of Parks, Wednesday afternoon.  The Spitz Fire grew to 14 acres before containment was reached Wednesday evening.  Crews are mopping up and patrolling for any lingering embers that could go undetected and possibly ignite a new fire.

The fire was reported by one of the Kaibab National Forest engine crews around 3:00 p.m.  When crews arrived on the scene the fire was torching and spotting.  Incident Commander, Paul T. Carter, quickly organized operations and ordered air and ground resources. Two helicopters (one from the Kaibab National Forest and one from the Prescott National Forest) dropped water on hot spots on the north and south sides of the fire effectively slowing fire spread.  A dozer constructed fireline on the east side of the fire while firefighters worked to contain spots on the north and west sides of the fire.

Approximately 100 personnel responded to the fire from multiple agencies in Northern Arizona including:  Kaibab, Coconino and Prescott National Forests, cooperating city and rural fire departments, Coconino County Sheriff’s Department, Flagstaff Hot Shots and Arizona State Forestry Division crews.

An additional law enforcement officer has been ordered to continue the investigation of this incident and other activities on the forest.  For more information, please call Punky Moore at 928-635-5653.
