Fires in California

On June 4, 2002, MODIS captured this image of scattered fires (red dots) across California (left). The largest of the fires is the Wolf Fire northwest of Los Angeles. At lower right, a patchwork of green reveals where water from the Colorado River is being diverted to turn desert into farmland. This irrigation water runs into the Salton Sea (large body of inland water at lower right) where its high fertilizer and pesticide load has created numerous water pollution problems. At image right, is the state of Nevada.
