Three Bernalillo County firefighters have joined a massive effort in Trigo Canyon east of Belen to extinguish a wildfire which started yesterday in the Manzano Mountains, Cibola National Forest—some five to ten miles away from area residents.

The firefighters, Lt. Johnny Walker, Kevin McClellan, and Dakota Powers are part of 335-member crew which includes firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service, New Mexico State Forestry Division, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Torrance and Valencia County Fire Departments, and an interagency type 2 fire crew from Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.

The U.S. Forest Service says the fire, which burned some 300 acres on the west side of the Manzano Mountains yesterday, has now moved to the east side of the mountains where it has torched about 200 more acres.

No evacuations have been ordered at this time and officials say the fire is approximately 16% contained.
