Program to predict combined transfer of heat and moisture in multi-layer building construction. Inputs hourly weather data from diskette and predicts the moisture content and temperature of the construction layers as a function of time of year. Can be used to develop guidelines and practices for controlling moisture in walls, flat roofs, and cathedral ceilings.

Keywords

combined heat and moisture transfer, envelope

Validation/Testing

N/A

Expertise Required

Low to moderate level of computer literacy; most users require about 3 hours to learn how to use the program.

Users

Over 1250.

Audience

Building engineers, architects, consultants.

Input

ASHRAE WYEC Weather Data (over 50 cities available at http://www.bfrl.nist.gov/863/moist.html); user-defined building construction data.

Output

Moisture content of the construction layers is plotted versus time of year on the computer screen during program execution; in addition, various formatted output files are generated for subsequent analysis.

Computer Platform

PC-compatible, 486 or higher; Windows 3.1/95/98/NT, and a VGA or higher resolution monitor.

Programming Language

Fortran, Visual Basic

Strengths

User- friendly; predicts detailed hourly heat and moisture performance of building components. Can be used to generate guidelines and practices for controlling moisture.

Weaknesses

One-dimensional; does not include the transfer of heat and moisture by air movement.
