Elementary School

Elementary School Science Fair - Over 100 local schools take part every year in BNL's Elementary School Science Fair. Some 470 projects, created by over 500 children ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade, compete. The student projects include charts, experiments, demos, diagrams and collections with a scientific objective. BNL scientists and elementary school teachers judge the contest. Each student receives a ribbon for participating in the fair. The winner -- one for each grade level -- is awarded a medal and honorable mention ribbons are given out. Banners, which can be displayed alongside schools' sports banners, are awarded to the schools of the first-place winners.  Here is a short video describing the Science Fair.

Middle School

Middle School Regional Science Bowl - The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Middle School Science Bowl® is a two-part, highly publicized competition. It involves a model hydrogen fuel cell car competition and a math and science academic competition. In 2005, more than 2,000 students participated in twenty-four regional competitions throughout the nation.

MagLev Contest - Long Island, like so many areas, has traffic congestion problems. Many experts believe the best way to solve this problem is to design new transportation systems. One approach is to develop "MAGLEV" vehicles which float over a fixed track, supported (levitated) and driven by magnetic fields. In this contest, you will learn about MAGLEV technology and use math, science, and technology principles to optimize the design of a MAGLEV vehicle.

High School

High School Bridge Building Contest - High school students from Long Island submit their bridges to the ultimate pressure test, and compete to take part in a national contest! The construction and testing of model bridges promotes the study and application of principles of physics and also helps students develop "hands on" skills. Through participating, students get a flavor of what it is to be an engineer; designing structures to a set of specs and then seeing them perform their function.

High School Essay Contest - The contest aims to challenge students to question and deliberate the purposes and social implications of scientific research. Essays are expected to contain substantive, well-reasoned arguments (rather than simply opinions) that indicate a depth of understanding of scientific and societal issues. All high school students who attend school in Suffolk or Nassau County are eligible

High School Regional Science Bowl - The Department of Energy's National Science Bowl® is a highly publicized academic competition among teams of high school students who answer questions on scientific topics in astronomy, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, earth, computer and general science.
