Northport-East Northport Students Win Five First-Place Awards in Brookhaven Lab's Elementary School Science Fair
Upton, NY -- Students from the Northport-East Northport School District won five of seven first-place awards at Brookhaven National Laboratory's 2004 Elementary School Science Fair. Other first-place winners were students in the Connetquot and West Babylon school districts.
The students' projects were among 470 entered in the contest by 97 Suffolk County schools. Brookhaven Lab scientists and local elementary school teachers judged the projects, based on scientific thought, creativity, thoroughness and clarity.
The Northport-East Northport students who won first-place for their grade levels are: Benjamin Schorn, kindergarten, for his project titled "The Way We're Thinking About Lacrosse;" Kyle Farabaugh, second grade, for "Crash Test;" Devin Dwyer, third grade, for "The Physics of Skipping Stones;" Benjamin Mermelstein, fourth grade, for "The Effects of Temperature on Baseballs;" and Maeve Dwyer, fifth grade, for "What Propeller Design Makes the Most Static Thrust?" Maeve won first-place last year as well, in the fourth grade.
Connetquot Central School District first-grader Samantha Frosch came in first place for her project called "Up, Up and Away," and Matthew Leonard, a sixth-grade student from the West Babylon Free School District, won first-place for his project titled "Keep The Heat In."
