Students from Local School Districts Take First-Place Honors in Brookhaven Lab’s Science FairNorthport-East Northport School District (First Place, 1st, 3rd and 5th grades)UPTON, NY — Three students from the Northport-East Northport School District won first place for their grade levels in Brookhaven National Laboratory’s 2002 Elementary School Science Fair, capturing three of the seven first-place medals awarded at the fair on May 11. Alexander Apmann, a first-grade student at Bellerose Avenue Elementary School, won the first-place medal for his project, called “Parachutes”; Eli Doris, a third-grader at Dickinson Avenue Elementary School, placed first for his “Gerbil Maze Craze” project; and Brendan Dwyer, a fifth-grader at Ocean Avenue School, won for “Nozzle Design for Rockets.”

Elementary School Science Fair. His project was called “Boats Afloat.”
Commack School District (First Place, 4th and 6th grades)Sisters Elizabeth Leydon, a fourth-grade student at Burr Intermediate School, and Katherine Leydon, a sixth-grade student at Commack Middle School, each won first place for her grade level at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s 2002 Elementary School Science Fair. Elizabeth’s project was titled “Are You One-Sided?” and Katherine’s project was called “Got Bones? Get Calcium.” Sachem School District (First Place, 2nd grade)Michael Dennis, a second-grade student at Wenonah Elementary School, won first place for his grade level at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s 2002 Elementary School Science Fair. His project was called “How Goldfish Survive in Ponds Outside on Long Island.” Some 463 projects were entered in the fair, which involved over 500 students in 110 Suffolk County schools. Brookhaven scientists and local elementary school teachers judged the projects on the basis of scientific thought, creativity, thoroughness and clarity.
