Regional Middle School Science Bowl

at Brookhaven National Laboratory

2009 Competition: March 7, 2009

The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Middle School Science Bowl® is a two-part, highly publicized competition. It involves a model hydrogen fuel cell car competition and a math and science academic competition. In 2005, more than 2,000 students participated in twenty-four regional competitions throughout the nation.

This year, Brookhaven will host both an academic competition and the model hydrogen fuel cell car competition, inviting schools from Long Island to participate in both parts of the program.

In the academic competition, teams of middle school students answer questions on scientific topics in astronomy, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, earth, computer and general science. The teams are comprised of five students (one of whom is an alternate) and a teacher who acts as an advisor and coach. The competition consists of a round robin followed by a single elimination final. Questions are in the form of multiple choice and short answer. The model fuel cell car competition challenges students to design, build, and race model cars.

Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams in both parts of the competition with the winner of the academic competition receiving an invitation to an all-expense paid trip to compete in Washington D.C. for the national title.

All students who participate will receive medallions and certificates.

The National Middle School Science Bowl web site provides information for students, coaches, and volunteers. The competition will be limited to 20 teams and schools will be selected on a first-come basis.

Teacher workshops The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car Challenge Teacher Workshop will be held TBD.  The workshop is limited to 40-50 teachers.  It will be first-come, first-serve, though registered coaches in the Middle School Science Bowl & Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car Challenge Competition will receive preference.  An General Motors or Department of Energy instructor will lead the workshop, and teachers will receive fuel cell kits and curriculum guides as well as a student kit for their Science Bowl team.  Refreshments will be served.
