OSHA and Cliff Creek Builders Inc. Form Safety and Health Partnership for St. Thomas Ritz Carlton Construction Project

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has signed a comprehensive safety and health partnership with Cliff Creek Builders Inc. (CCB) to eliminate serious hazards and achieve a high level of worker safety and health on the Ritz Carlton-St. Thomas U.S. Virgin Islands construction project.

The partnership's goal is to reduce injuries caused by the most frequent construction hazards. It also seeks to develop and implement a comprehensive safety and health program involving contractors and to achieve a high level of employee safety and health training.

"This partnership allows us to work cooperatively with employers and employees to eliminate hazards and reduce injuries," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. "We estimate that this partnership will involve 20 contractors and benefit more than 200 tradespeople working on this project."

"Through the partnership, we hope to sustain a working relationship with Cliff Creek Builders and its subcontractors beyond this project," said Jose Carpena, OSHA's area director for the Caribbean. "In fact, this agreement has its roots in our partnership on the Yacht Haven construction project on St. Thomas, a project for which Cliff Creek is a subcontractor."

Cliff Creek Builders Inc. is the general contractor for the remodeling of the Ritz Carlton at 6900 Great Bay St., St. Thomas. The project also includes the addition of two floors to two buildings and the remodeling of the hotel's restaurants. It will encompass site construction, structural steel erection, concrete, masonry, elevator, mechanical, electrical and carpentry work. Cliff Creek and all subcontractors will participate in the partnership.

Clark and Carpena signed the partnership for OSHA. Signing for Cliff Creek Builders Inc. were Chief Executive Officer Ron D. Parker, Safety Director Brian Bennett and Project Manager Mike Ellsworth.

OSHA Strategic Partnerships for Worker Safety and Health are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L.
