National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program

Program Description

A national network of 52 Space Grant consortia with over 550 affiliated institutions, including more than 350 colleges and universities, participates in the National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program. Each consortium receives NASA funds to administer the program and is required to obtain matching funds from non-Federal sources. The comprehensive grassroots program serves the Nation in three broad enterprises: research, education, and public service. Educational opportunities are provided for graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, precollege teachers and students, and the public.

Program Objectives

  • Continue to strengthen the national network of colleges and universities with interests and capabilities in aeronautics, astronautics, space science and technology, and related fields.
  • Encourage cooperative programs and collaborations among colleges, universities, business and industry, and Federal, state, and local governments.
  • Promote research, education, and public service programs related to aeronautics, astronautics, space science, and technology.
  • Recruit and train U.S. citizens for careers in aeronautics, astronautics, space science, and related technology, placing emphasis on diversity by recruiting women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities.
  • Support the national agenda to develop a strong science, mathematics, and technology education base from elementary through university levels.

Eligibility Requirements

For students awards:

  • Be a U.S. citizen enrolled full time, or accepted full-time enrollment, at a Space Grant affiliated higher education institution.
  • Specific eligibility requirements can be obtained on a state-by-state basis by contacting the state Space Grant offices.
For faculty awards:

  • Most state Space Grant consortia provide awards to faculty whose research interests coincide with NASA's broad mission and with the economic and development needs of the state.
Specific eligibility requirements can be obtained on a state-by-state basis by contacting the state Space Grant offices.

Application Process

Competitions for scholarship and fellowship awards are announced by each Space Grant consortium to their affiliated institutions. Applicants must apply in the state of full-time enrollment according to the state Space Grant consortium application procedures. Competitions are usually held toward the middle of the academic year.
