NASA Educational Workshops

Program Description

NASA Educational Workshops (NEW) model the integration of the National Education Standards in mathematics, science, and technology. The workshops provide teachers with an opportunity to observe NASA's state-of-the-art research and development through direct interaction with scientists, engineers, technicians, and educational specialists at NASA Field Centers. Selected participants will spend two weeks during the summer at one of NASA's Centers or facilities.

Translation activities are incorporated into the workshop to help teachers adapt their new content knowledge, experience, and materials into their specific educational situations. The NEW participants work with NASA educational specialists and curriculum specialists to fit the wealth of materials and information received into the classroom.

Participants are given the opportunity to update their knowledge and to develop new interdisciplinary and team-teaching strategies.

The workshops are held annually between mid-June and mid-August at NASA's ten field centers. The selection process for participation in the workshops is competitive. Approximately 24 participants are chosen for each workshop.

The content of the Dryden's workshops centers on the center's mission of aero-space flight research and how its example may be used to teach K-12 mathematics, science, and technology. The NEW participants work with Dryden educational specialists learning about aeronautical research and how to fit NASA education materials into the classroom. Graduate credits in education are available to participants who complete the workshop.

Dryden workshop participants are provided with lodging in Lancaster, CA, a per diem for meals, and reimbursement for travel expenses to Dryden.

Program Objectives

The purpose of NASA's Educational Workshops is to use NASA's missions to demonstrate the integrated applications of science, mathematics, technology, and related subject matter by expanding curricula and providing instructional opportunities for educators.

The programs are intended to enhance the teaching techniques, sciences and math skills, and academic preparation of the educator. In addition, the program is intended to expose teachers to the use of alternative delivery strategies including educational technologies such as satellite broadcasts and computers.
