SBIR & STTR Programs

Federal Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant programs provide financial assistance to small businesses to aid in research and development designed to lead to the introduction of important new products.  From time to time, small businesses have sought the assistance of Brookhaven National Laboratory in their R&D efforts, frequently including investigators at the Lab in some collaborative role in their SBIR and STTR applications and awards.  Arrangements of this kind serve to maximize return on the Federal government's investment in the equipment and facilities which comprise a national lab.

If you represent a small business interested in exploring potential research collaborations and technology development with Brookhaven National Laboratory, contact Michael J. Furey in the Office of Intellectual Property and Sponsored Research at 631-344-2103.  We will be glad to discuss the possibilities.

SBIR STTR

A word to the wise, from the SBA...

As you explore SBIR and STTR funding opportunities, we urge you to heed the advice of the U.S. Small Business Administration: “don’t judge an agency’s interests by its name…understand the agency’s mission and needs.”  In the case of the U.S. Department of Energy, for example, small businesses should note that funding is provided for research not only in areas such as energy efficiency but also in the medical sciences, biotechnology, environmental issues and more. The same observation can be made about SATOP, whose link appears below.

Many might never know of this resource, falsely assuming that the free engineering services they provide are limited to small businesses in aeronautics; not true.  So, take time out to examine program announcements beyond their surface and understand, more fully, each organization's mission.  In the case of Federal agencies, you will find their is much support available to small businesses.
