A profile view of Seine Bank in: Geographie des Atlantischen Ozeans by Gerhard
Schott, 1912. It shows a flat-topped seamount, what we would today call a
guyot. In fact, many of the seamounts discovered prior to the invention of the
echo sounder were flat-topped seamounts having a wide surface area on the top
increasing the probability of discovery by widely spaced piano-wire soundings.
