Medical emergencies: The Occupational Medicine Clinic is a employment-based specialty clinic, not an acute care facility.  Referral or transport to a local clinic or hospital emergency room may be required when ill persons present to the Clinic.

  • Emergency assistance from the Fire Rescue group on site can be obtained at any time by calling the Laboratory's emergency extension 2222 or 911.  During regular work hours the OMC will evaluate and may treat persons who present or are brought to the OMC for medical assistance.  Referral or transport to a local hospital emergency room may be required at the discretion of the OMC physician. The OMC may request transport by the BNL ambulance according to established protocol. Note that intoxicated employees should never be allowed to drive themselves to OMC, and should be brought to OMC by their manager.

The OMC is not a designated acute care facility. Off-site ambulances and on-site emergencies which involve cases requiring immediate transport to a local hospital emergency will proceed directly to same. At times when the OMC is not in operation the Fire Rescue group is responsible for triage and transport of medical problems which arise on site. For persons who come to the OMC for assistance when the OMC is not open, a phone in the OMC entrance connects with Police Headquarters and is accessible at all times  A sign clearly designates this phone and the procedure to follow to obtain medical assistance.

Management Consultations:
Supervisors may call the OMC nurses, physicians or EAP Manager for assistance with individual or group problems or for guidance in matters of health and safety including any concerns about the work environment.  The OMC nurse can be reached at x3670 or patricia@bnl.gov and will direct calls to appropriate members of the OMC staff. Or the OMC manager may be contacted.

Consultation for personal medical conditions:
Employees with medical problems of a personal nature are referred to their personal physician for diagnosis and treatment. Note that OMC can provide symptomatic relief and guidance or referral, but cannot workup, treat or provide prescriptions.

MRO services: The OMC Manager is the Medical Review Officer (MRO) for BNL’s alcohol and drug testing program, in accordance with BNL policy and DOE requirements. The OMC’s role in this program includes testing, quality assurance, review and interpretation of tests results. Fitness for duty determinations may be required in connection with MRO services.  The OMC has qualified MRO's available on staff.  A description of the scope of the work and  the training requirements for MRO's can be found at the Medical Review Officer Certification Council website.
