The conventional approach to serological diagnosis of HIV relies on the use of an ELISA followed by Confirmation by Western Blot. Recently there has been suggestions that in high incidence areas two positive screening tests may be sufficient to confirm exposure to HIV. However, in our laboratory samples that are positive on two different ELISAs but negative or indeterminate by Western Blot (CDC criteria) have been noted. These specimens have been followed up where possible and further tests done including p24 antigen, repeat Western Blots, or a third ELISA. The results of this investigation are presented and an analysis of the results with conclusions drawn regarding the proposal concerning the use of two ELISAs.
