I've read over the notice regarding voluntary labeling of whether a food is bioengineered or not, and I do not believe that this proposed regulation will benefit consumers. Consumers should have the right to know whether a food is bioengineered or not, regardless of what information the company wants the consumers to have easy access to.
All foods should be labeled clearly to indicate whether they were bioengineered or not, not just those foods that companies choose to label.
I commend the FDA on its recent work to create a certification for organic foods, and I encourage you to do the same for bioengineered foods--let the consumers know what we're putting in our bodies.
Thank you for your attention.
