From: Collette Adkins Giese [cadkinsgiese@hotmail.com] Sent: Friday, February 23, 2001 11:18 AM To: FDADockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: downed animals I am writing to urge you to ban the sale of downed animals. These are animals that are too sick to walk themselves to slaughter. There is no humane way to transport these animals and they are typically pushed with bulldozers or pulled with tractors, causing tremendous pain to these already suffering animals. By banning the sale of these animals, they can instead be immediately euthanized. I don't think people would want to eat the meat from these very sick animals anyway. Finally, there will be little economic impact on the farmers because they comprise a very small percentage of animals slaughtered. Banning the sale of downed animals may even provide additional motivation to transport animals with care to ensure they are not injured. Thank you so much, Collette L.
