Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week -- February 9-15, 1997
February 9-15 is National Child Passenger Safety Awareness
Week.
As of January 29, 1997, a total of 35 children have died as a
result
of injuries associated with deployment of air bags in motor-vehicle
crashes. Hundreds more children aged less than 5 years die each
year
because they are not buckled into a child-safety seat or the
child-safety seat is misused; approximately 80,000 more are
seriously
injured (1).
Most of these fatalities and injuries are preventable but
require the combined effort of increased public education, improved
child passenger safety laws, and strong enforcement of these laws.
National Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week is a time to enhance
activities focusing on child passenger safety. Additional
