An estimated 8,300 veterans will be homeless tonight. Many homeless veterans served by the VA New Jersey Health Care System (VANJHCS) face serious barriers to community return, including substance abuse and mental health problems. Because homelessness is the result of many factors, VANJHCS offers a wide range of services to meet the needs of homeless veterans:

  • Treatment & Rehabilitation: The Domiciliary's 3 to 4 month, 85-bed residential treatment program provides intensive rehabilitation services. An interdisciplinary treatment team offers medical, psychiatric, vocational, and recreational services within a modified therapeutic community structure. The program utilizes a variety of treatment modalities with a strong emphasis on the 12-step model.
  • Work Training & Employment: Many homeless veterans have not worked regularly for many years. For most homeless veterans, the opportunity to regain both housing and their independence depends upon full-time employment. The VA's Veterans' Industries program places homeless veterans into paid, on-the-job training in the following areas: construction, golf operations, horticulture, retail sales, food preparation, housekeeping, warehousing, nursing assistants, and clerical support. This program is accredited by CARF, the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission.
  • Transitional Housing: The VA, in partnership with several community-based agencies, has well over 100 units of transitional housing. Veterans can live in this safe, affordable housing for up to two years, taking advantage of program supports to prepare for independent living.

VANJHCS's unique, innovative continuum of care has attracted national attention. Staff and veterans served by VANJHCS have been asked to testify before the US Congress.
