Chickadees and other songbirds flit and chatter. Listen for the high-pitched whir of hummingbirds zipping around in search of nectar from wild flowers and berry bushes in bloom. Sit a moment and take it all in. Listen for the pounding of hooves and watch for the wild horses that frequent the area.

Availability

Deer Creek Guard Station is available for rent May through mid-November, weather permitting. Weather conditions and snow may delay opening of the road to the guard station beyond the planned opening date and may force early closure of the road prior to the planned closing date.

The cabin was built in 1956 and used as a work station by fire guards. Forest Service fire guards were the smoke chasers. Lookout personnel alerted them to smoke emerging from the forest, and the guards rushed to the site to assess the situation, put out or contain the blaze, and then report back and call for additional help, if needed.

Description

This rustic, two-room cabin contains a kitchen and a combined living room/bedroom. The living room/bedroom is furnished with one set of twin bunk beds, a futon and couch to sleep four comfortably, as well as a wood stove for heat (firewood may be available). The kitchen is furnished with a table and four chairs, and is equipped with a propane cook stove, propane refrigerator and propane lights. There is no water on site; visitors must bring plenty for drinking, cooking and washing.

An outdoor primitive toilet is located close to the house. A picnic table sits under the shade of a tall Ponderosa pine. Horses and stock can be can be accommodated in the adjacent corral.

Area Attractions & Activities

In the spring and summer enjoy wildflowers, horseback riding, wildlife viewing (watch for wild horses, as well as elk, black bear, deer and wild turkeys), bird watching, nature photography and splendid peace and quiet. Fishing spots are plentiful on Deer Creek and South Fork John Day.

Directions

From John Day travel south on Highway 395 approximately 17 miles to County Road 63 (Izee Highway). Travel County Road 63 to the junction of Forest Service Road (FSR) 24. Travel FSR 24 for 10 miles. Turn left onto FSR 514. Travel about .25 mile staying to the right until you reach the locked gate entry to the facility grounds.

If traveling from the west, take Highway 26 to FSR 21 (also known as Fields Creek Road - approximately 12 miles east of Dayville, OR). Turn right and travel 14 miles. Continuing on FSR 21, turn left and drive about 1.5 miles to FSR 2180. Turn right onto FSR 2180, travel 4 miles to FSR 2480. Veer left on FSR 24, travel .25 mile to FSR 514. Turn right onto FSR 514 and drive .25 mile to the Guard Station.
